“Kindness is natural - we see it all around us. It drives people to pay attention to each other - to try to understand what they enjoy, what they need. It emerges from a sense of common humanity, promotes sharing, effort on the others’ behalf, sacrifice for the good of the other. It drives imagination, resourcefulness and creativity in interpersonal, family, community, and international life. It is also difficult, involving overcoming narrow self-interest, anxiety, conflict, distaste, and limited resources. Kindness involves the risk of getting things wrong, maybe of being hurt somehow in the process.”
